About the Managing Director, John B. Mumford

John Mumford is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Europe for three years and for two tours of duty in Vietnam – first as an Advisor to the Army of South Vietnam and an Area Engineer and later as Management Officer for the 143 bases and camps occupied by U.S. Forces. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, and numerous other medals.

Following his military service, Mr. Mumford entered the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, where he was awarded the Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School. While at Harvard, he was Chairman of the student government.

Upon graduation from Harvard, he was appointed Project Administrator for Construction of Walt Disney World in Florida. This project was the second largest non-government construction project in U.S. history behind the Alaska Pipeline, which was completed at the same time. The construction of Walt Disney World involved 25,000 construction craftsmen from throughout the United States.

In May 1972 Mr. Mumford was selected as one of seventeen White House Fellows by the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships. Appointed a Special Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Labor, Mr. Mumford served on two White House Task Forces – Worker’s Compensation and Trade Adjustment Assistance for the 1974 U.S. International Trade Bill.

After one year managing the turnaround of a private company and several real estate projects, Mr. Mumford returned to Federal Government service as a Consultant and later Special Assistant to the Secretary of Labor and later as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Employment Standards – a position that he held for two Presidents and two Secretaries of Labor.

In this assignment he reported to the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment Standards and directed three agencies in the execution and enforcement of more than 100 Federal statutes and Executive Orders. The agencies had a total of more than 3,000 full time Federal employees working in 346 offices throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The annual budget was approximately $3.0 billion (1976 U.S. dollars equivalent).

He returned to his private consulting practice in 1979 where he served several Fortune 500 clients prior to forming The Washington Group Consultants in 1982. Since that time he has assisted more than 100 public and private clients in a variety of consulting assignments in strategic planning, corporate turnaround management, and many others.

The Washington Group Consultants was reorganized as a Limited Liability Company in 2005 and begins its 27th year of operations on January 1, 2009.

Mr. Mumford is listed in Outstanding Young Men of America for 1972 and 1973 and in Who’s Who in America.
